As SB72 approaches its public hearing we have the opportunity to submit write our legislators. Look yours up here. Unfortunately we cannot submit written testimony on Senate bills. Below is a sample letter:
Senator,
I am writing today in regards to Senate Bill 72. This bill is currently assigned to committee. I am appalled to learn this bill was proposed to begin with. Lifetime imprisonment, especially in our existing prison-industrial system, is anything but reformative. This, in addition to incentivizing the "bounty hunting" of human beings is inhumane and a violation of human rights.
I implore you, by all means your seat affords you, to ensure that this legislation doss not pass. We cannot allow a reality in which we are quite genuinely enslaving a group of people, based on their failure to navigate a nearly impossible system of immigration. If the fact they are human beings isn't enough to stop this, the migrant community, legal and not, are crucial for the state, national, and global economies; and implementing this system of inhumanity will be costly both financially and morally.
Again, we must stop this legislation.
Signed,
